32 vs 48 Teams: What Changed
The biggest format change since 1998 when the tournament expanded to 32 teams.
The Third-Place Advancement Rule
The biggest new mechanic of the 48-team format. For the first time, third-placed teams can reach the knockout stage.
1How It Works
- 112 groups × 4 teams = 48 teams in group stage
- 2Top 2 from each group advance directly (24 teams)
- 3Best 8 of 12 third-placed teams also advance
- 432 teams start the knockout stage — the new Round of 32
2Tiebreaker Order
- 1.Group stage points (Win = 3, Draw = 1, Loss = 0)
- 2.Goal difference
- 3.Goals scored
- 4.Fair play score (yellow cards −1, direct red −4, etc.)
- 5.FIFA World Ranking
The 12 Groups
