The 8 best third-placed teams across the 12 groups advance to the Round of 32. Teams are ranked by points, then goal difference, goals scored, fair play score, and finally FIFA world ranking.

What is the Round of 32?

It's a completely new knockout round added for the 48-team format. 32 teams (12 group winners + 12 group runners-up + 8 best third-placed teams) play 16 matches to reach the Round of 16.

Will the tournament be longer?

Yes, but only by 7 days. The 2026 World Cup runs 39 days (June 11 – July 19), up from 32 days in Qatar 2022.

How many matches will the champion play?

8 matches — one more than in the 32-team format. 3 group stage + 1 Round of 32 + 1 Round of 16 + 1 Quarter-final + 1 Semi-final + 1 Final.

Which cities host the final and semifinals?

The Final is at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey (July 19). Semifinals are at AT&T Stadium in Dallas and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The third-place match is at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Is the tri-host format a first?

Yes. 2026 is the first World Cup hosted by three countries — USA (11 venues), Mexico (3), and Canada (2). The opening match is at the iconic Estadio Azteca, which also becomes the first stadium to host matches at three different World Cups (1970, 1986, 2026).
