Verhaal
Egypt return to the World Cup with Mohamed Salah leading the charge — arguably the best African footballer of his generation. The 2018 campaign (their first in 28 years) ended in three group-stage defeats, but having Salah healthy and in peak form changes everything. The Pharaohs have won a record seven AFCON titles and carry the weight of a continent's expectations.
Group G with Belgium, Iran and New Zealand is challenging but offers a path. Egypt should comfortably beat New Zealand and compete directly with Iran for second place behind Belgium. Salah's presence alone makes Egypt a threat to anyone on a given day. A second-place finish and Round of 32 appearance is the realistic target.
Tactisch profiel
The system revolves around getting Salah the ball in dangerous areas. A 4-2-3-1 with Salah cutting inside from the right is the default. Trezeguet provides width on the left. The midfield duo protects the defense and feeds Salah. Strengths: Salah (one of the five best players in the world), passionate support, AFCON pedigree, and the defensive discipline of a North African side. Weaknesses: over-dependence on Salah (when he's marked, Egypt struggle), limited squad depth, and a historically poor World Cup record.
Players to Watch for Bracket Picks
Liverpool · 33
One of the greatest Premier League players ever, likely in his final World Cup. Salah's goal rate at Liverpool remains elite and his penalty record is near-perfect. Egypt have never advanced past the group stage — if they do, Salah's individual brilliance will be the reason.
Manchester City · 27
Egypt's breakout star. Marmoush's explosive 2024-25 at Eintracht Frankfurt — 20 goals and 12 assists — earned him a move to Manchester City. He gives Egypt a second genuine goal threat alongside Salah, something they've never had at a World Cup before.
