Historia
Iran are Asia's second-highest-ranked team and one of the most experienced World Cup participants from the continent. Seven appearances and counting — though advancement from the group stage has always eluded them. The 2018 campaign (a near-miss against Portugal and Spain in a group where they earned 4 points but finished third) showed how close Iran can get.
Group G with Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand presents a clear hierarchy. Iran will battle Egypt directly for second place behind Belgium. With a higher FIFA ranking (#20 vs Egypt's #33) and more recent World Cup experience, Iran are slight favorites — but Salah's individual quality tilts the Egypt matchup. Third place and best-third qualification is the floor; second place is the ambition.
Profil taktyczny
Amir Ghalenoei plays a compact 4-1-4-1 that is extremely difficult to break down. Iran's defensive record in qualifying was one of the best in Asia. Sardar Azmoun provides the goalscoring threat, supported by Mehdi Taremi's link-up play. Strengths: defensive organization (Iran concede very few goals), set-piece quality, experienced tournament squad, and the ability to frustrate technically superior opponents. Weaknesses: limited attacking creativity, dependency on counter-attacks, and historically poor results when needing to chase a game.
Players to Watch for Bracket Picks
Olympiacos · 33
Iran's most clinical finisher and penalty taker. After spells at Porto and Inter Milan, Taremi now plays at Olympiacos. His hold-up play and finishing inside the box give Iran a proven European-level striker — a rarity for Asian qualifiers.
Shabab Al-Ahli · 31
Injury history across European spells, now at Shabab Al-Ahli in the UAE
Iran's second striker and creative forward. Azmoun's link-up play with Taremi gives Iran a two-man attack that can trouble any defense on its day. He scored a vital goal against Portugal at the 2018 World Cup — proof he can deliver against elite opposition.
